Hell of Wheel

Halloween will soon be arriving in our dear Gothenburg and as you all know, halloween is all about blood and scary things. Well we figured that nothing says bloody and scary like a good revenge – especially if it’s a Roller derby revenge!

October 27:th Gothenburg Roller derby will do all in their power to seek revenge on the ferocious and feared Crime City Rollers B-team. Last time CCR claimed victory in Malmö. Now GBGRD will do everything in their power to give CCR and the audience a rematch they’ll never forget.

So bring your friends and family to witness the rematch of the century or regret forever that you didn’t.

Track Queens

The battle to become Europe’s top WFTDA Roller Derby league is coming to Berlin. The Berlin Bombshells have called and the top ten ranked WFTDA leagues in Europe have answered and will be fighting for the first place.

Track Queens Battle Royal will be hosted by Bear City Rollerderby, which was founded in May 2008 in Berlin. Their travelteam, the Berlin Bombshells, became runner-up in the German national championships in 2010 and is the first German WFTDA member.

It promises to be an exciting day, as it is not every day that Europe’s Crème de la Crème in Roller Derby meets on the same track to fight for the crown in European Roller Derby.

Besides Berlin Bombshells, the following teams are coming to Arena Berlin for Track Queens Battle Royal:

Roller Derby Bout!

If we look back in our history books, long before any of us were born, there was a time when trolls walked the earth and when Sweden and Norway fought a massive battle that split the two countries apart.

Well, September 29:th, a new chapter in history will be written. An even bigger battle will be fought, and this time – it will be fought on roller skates. Trust us, You don’t wan’t to miss it!

All the way from Trondheim, the fierce Nidaros Roller Derby will come to Gothenburg to face Gothenburg Roller Derby in the first bout EVER between a Swedish- and a Norwegian team.

And on top of all this, the amazing Dödspatrullen will be playing some awesome music during the bout!

- How come you started playing roller derby?

I got interested in roller derby after I watched the movie “Whip It” with Drew Barrymore, and just about the same time I also got connected with it through several friends and through Facebook. When I realized there was a team in Gothenburg I waited for a try-out, and after that try-out day in February 2011, I was hooked! I am really happy to have found a sport that suits me and my personality well, since it is hard workout and rock´n´roll – all at the same time!

- What is your background pre-roller derby?

When I was little I tried a few sports like tennis and swimming, but nothing really stuck. When I was about 17 I started dancing funk jazz and hip hop which I did for a few years before I quit and started doing…like…nothing, when it comes to physical activity. I really think roller derby is cool in that sense, that it attracts people that haven´t really been that interested in sports and working out before, but now I definitely am! Win-win situation!

- What is your favorite position to play in roller derby and why?

I play blocker almost all of the time during practice and bouts, and it would be super to be kick-ass good at that, to be the rock no one can get past! But to be a jammer would definitely also be really exciting, and would like to try that in the future! This year unfortunately, I have missed a lot of derby practice due to my work (I work as a PhD student at the University of Gothenburg) so I am not really there yet, neither the kick ass-blocker or the potential jammer. But like I said, in the future. Close future I hope!

- How did you prepare for the bout, both as a team and on your own?

Since this was my very first bout (!) I read the whole WFTDA rules book, to freshen up. Also I tried to workout on my own, besides the derby practices. I watched bouts on internet and try to study strategy a bit. With my team we did a lot of blocker training, building and maintaining walls and such. We also did a bit of quick starts, where the pack starts at the jammer line, which turned out to be useful since the Danish team did a lot of jammer line starts. And also, I of course imagined us winning the whole thing.

- Were there any moments that were especially memorable before/ during or after the bout?

I will remember the last 5-10 minutes of the bout for the rest of my life! It was sooo exciting and totally nerve wrecking! Since we had been in the lead for almost the whole game, we got a little caught off guard when the Danish team passed us. Then we really had to focus and put all energy into scoring more points! Our jammers had been in the penalty box for several rounds at the very end, and that was when the Danish team scored their points. One thing really stuck in my head is jammer Villain Villa coming in from the penalty box, scoring a lot of points for our team again, and then collapsing on the track after the jam in tears, anger and disappointment over her penalty, and how Honey Blaze hugs her and helps her off the track, almost dragging her. That moment was quite emotional and there is a really good photo catching this moment!

- How do you view your individual efforts in the game?

I was very nervous before the bout since, like I said before, this was my premiere bout! I was afraid of being the one making no use on the track, since I have missed a lot of practice this year. But it actually turned out pretty good I would say! In almost every jam I took part in I felt like I/we had control over the situation, and very often kept the Danish jammer behind our walls for a long time. My head was really in the game, and nothing else mattered at that point. But of course, I can get a lot better, which I will.

- How did it feel being a part of winning the teams first bout?

Awesome!!! I am really proud of all of us! Imagine telling your grand kids that you were a part of the team and celebrated the first victory in 2012, when Gothenburg Roller Derby has been around for 30-40 years…

- So, whats ahead in your derbyfuture?

Getting better, faster, stronger! Just keep practicing, first and foremost on becoming a terrific blocker, and maybe later also a good-as-hell jammer!
